I'd like to submit a warning about the Bilash on the Wellingborough Road in Northampton. They have a "2 for 1 starter and main course" offer on at the moment, Sunday to Thursday.

This offer has sprung up since Tamarinds opened up literally next door. Tamarinds is, frankly, much better than the Bilash. In every way. Actually, so is the Maharajah across the road, so really there was no real reason to eat at the Bilash at all until this offer came along.

But there is, as it were, "small print". Which they will use against you.

My wife and I went there last week and had a quite acceptable meal. We had 3 poppadoms, a main each (including the very nice "Everest Chicken"), rice each, a naan, bombay duck starter each, 2 cokes and 2 beers. This all came to £19, which we thought was great. The Bombay Duck wasn't a great success (well, we had to try it once) but everything else was pretty good. Nothing really special, but quite acceptable for £19.

We tried it again last night. Slightly different result.

Had a slightly smaller meal - 3 poppadoms, 2 mains, 2 rice, some bombay potatoes, a naan again, but no starter and only 1 beer and 1 coke. We basically weren't as hungry. Now normally that might have come out as slightly cheaper - no starters, less drinks, only one side order extra.

No, down they pop a bill for £26 - £7 MORE than last time.

I politely query the bill and am told that the special offer only applies if you both have a starter AND a main course. You might think this is fair, but I say...
- the offer sign in the window does not make that clear
- the waiter might have mentioned it when we ordered!
- the waiter might have even asked the customary "would you like any starters" question rather than somehow forgetting...
- since we had made a genuine mistake it might have been good customer service to knock off the price of the cheaper main!

But they didn't. When I pointed out that I could have ordered a cheap starter and knocked several pounds off the bill his reply was "Well, you will know next time"!!!

I hate to break this to you mate, but there isn't going to be a next time. "Next time" we'll be next door in Tamarinds having better food from more polite staff in a nicer more busy restaurant.

Anyway, if you do go there Sunday - Thursday, do yourself a favour. Make sure everyone has the Bombay Duck starter at 95p a go - it's not nice, but it's the cheapest starter by a distance. Though I would really not recommend eating it...
